Bechtel-Just Big or Big and BAD?
USAID's award of a $34.6 million contract to Bechtel to build Iraq's infrastructure is just one feather in the cap of this giant construction conglomerate. However, considering the company's enormous lobbying clout, it's not a surprising feather. Globally, Bechtel has an interesting history of international development work. For instance they overtook control of Cochabamba, Bolivia's third largest city's water system in 1999. Having raised the price of water there by 200%, the natural expectation was to see profits come rolling in. Surprisingly however, the Bolivian people did not take well to this idea, and thus began the great water war. Hmm...now that Bechtel is in charge of rebuilding Iraq's electricity, rails, airports, water, sanitation, and irrigation systems, wonder if they're in it for the sake of good ol' humanitarian values. Maybe someone should tell those ayRabs about the Bolivian adventure..
